The Cornell note-taking system, explained

The Cornell method is the most widely taught note-taking layout in the world, and it is really just three regions ruled onto an ordinary page. What makes it work is not the lines themselves but the review habit they encourage: you write notes on the right, pull out questions on the left, and force yourself to summarise at the bottom. This guide explains each part, how to use it in class and afterwards, and how to print a sheet sized correctly.

Where it comes from

The layout was devised in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University, and published in his study-skills classic How to Study in College. Its staying power comes from one idea: taking notes is the easy part, and most students never go back over them. The Cornell layout builds the going-back-over step into the page itself, so reviewing is almost automatic.

The three regions

A Cornell page is divided into three areas by two rules — one vertical line and one horizontal line near the foot of the page.

The note-taking area (right, largest)

This is where you write during the lesson or while reading: the main column, taking up most of the page. Notes here can be messy — abbreviations, arrows, quick diagrams. The goal in the moment is to capture ideas, not to be tidy.

The cue column (left, narrow)

A margin roughly 6 cm (about 2.5 inches) wide runs down the left. You leave it empty during class and fill it afterwards with keywords, questions and prompts that correspond to the notes beside them. The cue column is the engine of the method: cover the notes, read only a cue, and try to recall the rest.

The summary (bottom)

A band about 5 cm (two inches) tall across the foot of the page is for a two-or-three-sentence summary in your own words, written once the page is done. Compressing a whole page into a few lines is where the real learning happens.

The five R’s

Pauk described the workflow as five steps, easy to remember as five R’s:

The first step happens in class; the other four are what turn a passive transcript into something you actually remember.

Why it works

Two well-supported study ideas are baked into the layout. Active recall — testing yourself rather than rereading — is exactly what the cover-and-recite step forces, and it is far more effective than highlighting. Spaced review — returning to material at intervals — is what the weekly review builds in. The page quietly makes you do the two things that work and skip the ones that feel productive but are not.

Ruling and spacing

You can draw the divisions on any lined pad, but a sheet made for the method saves time and keeps every page consistent. The usual proportions are a cue column around 6 cm wide, a summary band around 5 cm tall, and ordinary writing lines — commonly 8 to 9 mm apart — filling the note area. Using it well

When another layout fits better

Cornell shines for lectures and reading with clear structure. For maths and science, where diagrams and worked steps dominate, a square grid or dot grid gives you room to align equations and sketch figures — some students keep a Cornell pad for theory and grid paper for problems.
