How to print graph paper at the exact size

The whole point of graph paper is that the grid is a ruler you can trust — a 5 mm square should measure 5 mm on the page. Yet the most common complaint about any printable grid is that it comes out slightly too small. Almost every time, the cause is one setting in the print dialog. This guide walks through exactly how to print a grid at true size on any printer, and how to prove it worked.
Why prints come out the wrong size
By default, most browsers and PDF readers try to be helpful: they shrink a document a little so nothing is clipped by the printer’s unprintable border. That behaviour is called “Fit to page”, “Shrink oversized pages” or “Scale to fit”, and it is exactly what you do not want for graph paper. Shrinking the page by even 4% turns a 5 mm grid into a 4.8 mm grid — enough to make measurements wrong and to stop two printed sheets from lining up.
The fix is always the same: print at 100% scale (sometimes labeled “Actual size”) with any fit-to-page option switched off. Everything below is really just where to find that switch in the software you happen to be using.
The one rule, step by step
Printing from a browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)
If you are downloading a PDF from Graph Paper Hub, open it in a proper PDF reader rather than printing the web page itself — you will get more reliable scaling controls. When you do print:
- Open the print dialog (Ctrl + P, or ⌘ + P on a Mac).
- Find “More settings” and set Scale to 100 (a custom scale), not “Fit to printable area” or “Default”.
- Set margins to None or Default; avoid “Minimum” if it forces a rescale.
- Check the paper size matches the sheet you generated — A4 grid on A4 paper, US Letter grid on Letter paper.
Printing from a PDF reader (Adobe Acrobat, Preview, SumatraPDF)
- In Adobe Acrobat/Reader, under Page Sizing & Handling choose “Actual size” (never “Fit” or “Shrink oversized pages”).
- On macOS Preview, choose “Scale: 100%” rather than “Scale to Fit”.
- Leave “Auto-rotate and center” on if you like — centring does not change the scale, only the position.
Because every sheet here is drawn in real millimeters and inches, once scaling is at 100% the grid is correct by construction. There is nothing else to calibrate.
Printer margins and the white border
Nearly every printer leaves a small strip around the edge of the paper that it physically cannot reach — typically 3 to 5 mm. That is why a full-page grid prints with a thin white frame. This is a hardware limit, not a flaw in the sheet, and crucially it does not shrink the grid: the squares inside the printed area are still the right size, there are just a few missing at the very edge.
If you need the grid to run closer to the edge, look for a “Borderless” option in your printer driver. Not all printers support it, and those that do often achieve it by very slightly enlarging the image — so if absolute accuracy matters more than edge coverage, keep borderless off.
Choosing a format for accurate prints
Graph Paper Hub exports three formats, and each is fine for true-size printing as long as you follow the 100% rule:
- PDF is the most reliable for printing. It carries its own page size, so the reader knows the sheet is A4 or Letter and does not have to guess.
- PNG is a high-resolution image (up to 600 dpi here). Use it when you want to drop the grid into another document. When printing a PNG on its own, make sure the printing app is not scaling it to fill the page.
- SVG is vector, so it stays razor-sharp at any size and can be edited in Inkscape or Illustrator. Set the document to your paper size before printing.
For most people, most of the time, downloading the PDF and choosing “Actual size” is the shortest path to a correct sheet.
Prove it with a ruler
Never trust the setting — trust the measurement. After the first sheet comes out, lay a ruler across ten grid squares and check the distance. On a 5 mm grid, ten squares should measure exactly 50 mm; on a quarter-inch grid, four squares should measure exactly one inch. Measuring across ten squares rather than one spreads out any small error and makes it obvious.
If the ten squares come up short, scaling is still active somewhere — go back and confirm the scale reads 100% and that no “fit” option has quietly switched itself back on. If they measure correctly, every sheet you print with those settings will be correct too.
A quick checklist
- Scale set to 100% / Actual size.
- “Fit to page” / “Shrink oversized pages” off.
- Paper size in the dialog matches the sheet you generated.
- Ten squares measured with a ruler come out exact.
