Graph paper grid sizes explained

Graph paper comes in a confusing spread of rulings: 5 mm, quarter-inch, “four to the inch”, engineering, quad. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one makes a page either too cramped to work in or too coarse to be useful. This guide explains what each size means, where it came from, and how to choose spacing that fits the job.
Metric grids: 1, 2, 5 and 10 mm
Metric graph paper is named directly by the distance between lines, which makes it wonderfully predictable.
- 5 mm is the everyday default — the ruling in most European exercise books. It is fine enough for neat maths and diagrams but still comfortable to write on.
- 10 mm (1 cm) is coarser, good for younger pupils, larger sketches and quick graphs where you do not need much resolution.
- 2 mm and 1 mm are fine and very fine, used for detailed plotting, scale drawings and lab work. 1 mm paper is often printed with a heavier line every 10 mm so you can still read it at a glance.
Because the grid is metric, it plays nicely with scale drawing: at a scale of 1:100, one 5 mm square represents half a meter, and the numbers stay tidy.
Imperial grids: quarter-inch and its cousins
Imperial paper is named by how many squares fit in an inch, which takes a moment to get used to:
- 4 squares per inch — quarter-inch squares. The classic American “quad” ruling, common in school maths.
- 5 squares per inch — one-fifth-inch squares, the traditional engineering choice because it divides decimally (each square is 0.2 inch).
- 8 and 10 squares per inch — finer grids for detailed drawing and plotting; 10 to the inch again suits decimal work (0.1 inch per square).
The trap is assuming quarter-inch is “about the same” as 5 mm. It is not — a quarter-inch is 6.35 mm, noticeably larger — so a design drawn on one will not line up on the other.
Quad, graph and engineering paper
These names describe styles rather than exact sizes, and they overlap:
- Quad-ruled just means a plain square grid, usually 4 or 5 squares to the inch. It is the default in most American notebooks.
- Graph paper is the general term for any printed grid used for plotting.
- Engineering paper is the pale green pad where the grid is printed faintly on the back of each sheet, so it guides your work without the lines showing up strongly in a photocopy. It is typically 5 squares to the inch with a heavier margin.
Accent lines make a grid readable
Whatever the base spacing, a heavier line every fifth or tenth square turns the grid into a built-in ruler. The bold lines let you count squares at a glance and keep long measurements from drifting. On a 1 mm or 2 mm grid an accent line is almost essential; on a 5 mm grid it is a nice-to-have. How to choose a size
Work backwards from the task:
- Everyday notes and maths: 5 mm or quarter-inch.
- Neat function plotting: 5 mm with a bold line every 10, or a dedicated coordinate grid with numbered axes.
- Scale and technical drawing: 2 mm metric, or 10-to-the-inch imperial for decimal dimensions.
- Big, bold, low-detail work: 10 mm.
- Handwriting practice or journalling: consider a dot grid instead, which guides without boxing you in.
