Grid paper for knitting, cross-stitch and beading

Charting a craft design on graph paper sounds simple — one square per stitch — until the finished piece comes out squashed or stretched. The catch is that the stitches in knitting, cross-stitch and beadwork are not all square, so the paper has to match the craft. This guide explains which grid to use and why.

The problem with plain squares

A square grid quietly assumes every stitch is as tall as it is wide. For cross-stitch that is roughly true, but for knitting and much beadwork it is not — and if you chart a design on square paper and work it in a craft whose stitches are a different shape, the picture distorts. A circle charted as a circle on squares can knit up as an oval. Matching the paper to the stitch shape is what keeps a charted design looking the way you drew it.

Knitting: use a proportioned grid

In most knitted fabric a stitch is wider than it is tall: you get more rows to the inch than stitches to the inch. A common stockinette gauge might be 5 stitches and 7 rows to the inch, which means each stitch cell should be wider than it is tall, not square. Charting on square paper therefore stretches your design vertically on the page — and squashes it when knitted.

The fix is knitter’s graph paper (also called proportioned or ratio graph paper), where the cells are rectangles matched to your gauge. Work out your stitch and row gauge from a swatch, set the cell ratio to match, and the chart will knit up in the proportions you drew. It is worth charting from your own swatch rather than a standard ratio, because gauge varies with yarn, needles and tension.

Cross-stitch: count is king

Cross-stitch is the friendly case: each stitch really is square, so a square grid is exactly right — one square per stitch. What matters here is the count of your fabric, the number of stitches per inch, which is set by the weave: 11-count, 14-count, 16-count and 18-count Aida are the usual choices, with higher counts giving finer, smaller work. The chart’s square size does not have to match the fabric count, because you are counting stitches, not measuring — but a heavier line every ten squares is invaluable for keeping your place across a large pattern. Traditionally each color is shown as a symbol as well as a color, so the chart still reads correctly when printed in black and white. A plain square grid with bold tens is a perfectly good cross-stitch chart.

Beading: it depends on the stitch

Beadwork is the fussiest, because the grid depends on how the beads sit against each other:

Cylinder beads such as delicas are taller than they are wide, so — as with knitting — the cells should be proportioned to the bead, not square, if the pattern is to look right when woven.
