Handwriting practice paper: which lines to use

Neat handwriting is mostly about consistency: letters the same height, sitting on the same line, leaning at the same angle. The right ruled paper makes that consistency visible while you practise, then you gradually need it less. But “lined paper” covers a surprising range of rulings, each built for a different stage or style. This guide explains the guide-line systems and which to reach for.
The anatomy of a handwriting line
Practice paper is defined by a set of horizontal guides that mark where parts of a letter belong. Four positions matter:
- The baseline — the solid line letters sit on. The single most important guide.
- The midline (or waist line) — the top of lower-case letters without ascenders, such as a, c, e. The gap from baseline to midline is the x-height.
- The ascender line — the top of tall letters like b, d, h and all capitals.
- The descender line — below the baseline, where the tails of g, j, p, y reach.
Consistent handwriting is really just landing each part of a letter on the right one of these lines every time.
Dotted thirds and dashed midlines
The most common school ruling divides the space between baselines into thirds with a dashed or dotted midline in the middle. A child learns that lower-case letters fill the middle third, ascenders reach the top, and descenders drop into the space below. Because the midline is dashed rather than solid, it guides without cluttering the finished writing. This dotted-thirds style is the standard for early handwriting in the UK, Australia and much of the US. Print versus cursive
The same three-zone ruling works for both print and cursive, but the emphasis differs. For print (manuscript), the priority is even height and spacing, so a clear midline matters most. For cursive, letters join and usually slant, so many practice sheets add faint diagonal slant lines to keep the lean consistent — the hardest thing to hold steady when joining letters. French ruling: Seyes
French schools use a distinctive grid called Seyes (or grands carreaux): strong horizontal baselines 8 mm apart, each split into four 2 mm rows by finer lines, with vertical lines every 8 mm as well. The fine horizontals give precise heights for the loops of French cursive, and the verticals govern spacing and slant. It looks busy but is superb for disciplined letterforms. Calligraphy: nib ladders and angles
Lettering has different needs again. Broad-nib calligraphy sizes letters in nib widths rather than millimetres: you set the x-height as a number of nib-widths (five is typical for many hands), so the guide spacing depends on the pen. Calligraphy sheets therefore often include a small nib ladder to establish that height, plus steep slant lines at the angle of the script — around 5° for foundational hands, steeper for italic. Square-cell writing for other scripts
Not every script sits on a baseline. Chinese characters are practised in square cells with cross-hairs — Tian Zi Ge — that show the proportions of each stroke, and Japanese is written in ruled columns of squares called Genko Yoshi. If you are practising CJK handwriting, those grids are the equivalent of dotted-thirds for the Latin alphabet.
Choosing and printing
- Early print handwriting: dotted thirds with a dashed midline.
