Triangle and diamond grid paper

A square grid is not the only way to tile a page. Turn the grid 45° and you get diamonds; build it from equilateral triangles and you get a mesh that tessellates in ways squares never can. Both open up pattern, lettering and design work that a plain grid makes awkward. This guide explains each and where it earns its place.
Beyond the square grid
Square grids are perfect for right angles and axis-aligned work, but a lot of design lives on the diagonal or the 60° slant. When your motif repeats along angled lines — a tessellation, an argyle sweater, a truss — forcing it onto squares fights the shape. Two grids match those jobs directly.
Triangle grid
A triangular grid fills the page with equilateral triangles, built from horizontal lines crossed by two sets of 60° diagonals. Because equilateral triangles tessellate cleanly and share the isometric angles, the grid is a natural for tessellations and geometric art, quilting and patchwork, tile and pattern design, and structural or truss sketches. Diamond grid
A diamond grid is simply an even square grid rotated 45°, so the page fills with upright diamonds instead of squares. That rotation makes the diagonals the dominant lines, which suits anything built on the diagonal: argyle and harlequin patterns, decorative and slanted lettering, quilting and textile layouts, and geometric art. When diagonals beat squares
The choice comes down to which lines your work follows:
- Right-angled, axis-aligned work — charts, plans, most writing: a square grid.
- 60° tessellation, quilting, isometric-style 3D: a triangle grid.
- 45° diagonal patterns, argyle, slanted lettering: a diamond grid.
